Nancy Guaccero Ramistella and John Ramistella gave birth to the singer on November 7, 1942, in New York City, New York, USA. John is of Italian ancestry. The family is from New York, but they have relocated to Baton Rouge, Louisiana. His father and uncle taught him to play the guitar when he was eight years old. In high school, the artist joined The Rockets, a music band led by Dick Holler, and wrote several hit songs such as Abraham, Martin, and John, the novelty song, and Snoopy vs. the Red Baron.
