Herdman chose to represent New Zealand, despite the fact that he is also eligible to play for England and Canada due to his parentage and residence, respectively. He said that he did not believe he is Canadian. His parents are British, and he was born in New Zealand. In April 2022, he was called up to the Canada U-20 training camp. He represented Canada in two unofficial friendlies against Costa Rica.
When asked about his time in Canada, he said that it was a positive experience that he would recommend to others. He knows several of the lads on the squad, but he has wanted to play for New Zealand since he was a toddler. Herdman made his New Zealand U20 debut in September 2022 after being called up in August to the New Zealand U20 team for the 2022 OFC U-19 Championship, where he scored in an 8-0 triumph against Costa Rica. New Zealand won the OFC U-19 title and advanced to the FIFA U-20 World Cup in 2023.
His parents met in high school and fell in love.
John and Clare Herdman, his parents, were childhood sweethearts. His father met his mother when he was 16 years old, and she has accompanied him on his voyage throughout the globe ever since. Jay has a sister called Lily Herdman as well.
His father was a primary school teacher before guiding Canada to the FIFA World Cup in 2022.
His father, John Herdman, was a primary school teacher in North East England before leading Canada to its first World Cup berth in 36 years with a 4-0 win against Jamaica. He is the only manager in history to have led a side to both the men’s and women’s World Cups. Because he did not play at the highest level, he was always told that he would never coach at the highest level, that as a women’s coach, he would never coach in the men’s game, that he would never qualify for the World Cup, and so on, and the only mission of his journey has been to bring that pioneer mindset to the forefront, recognizing that we can make all pioneers in our lives to be the first things.
How did his father gain the confidence of the players?
When questioned about how he develops trust with players during an interview with TSN, he said that there are many levels involved in developing trust with players, but the easy aspect is to provide safety to gain trust. For him, safety is people understanding you are genuine and human, not superhuman, and that you do not have all the solutions to all the questions that they expect leaders to have.
His players have seen him at his best and worst, and as soon as he shows them that he doesn’t have the solution, they begin to learn that it’s okay. Safety is the initial step and the most important factor in forming a trust. Then there’s a common goal that everyone must find out, and it’s that common purpose that serves as the basis of trust that holds everyone together.
It is a process that requires time with individuals; many people in sports are not willing to spend that time. Aside from that, he recounted the number of sacrifices and difficulties they did and took when they were ordered to play on the field at the height of the Covid, knowing that if they lost the game, their World Cup dream would be gone in only 90 minutes. Their loved ones were explaining to them why they were doing that during the Covid period, believing that they were jeopardizing both their lives and their careers. It had been a difficult mental and emotional trip.
His precise net worth is presently being determined. We now know how much his father, John Herdman, is worth. His father has a $5 million net worth as a result of his successful coaching career.
