Ajla Tomljanovic competed in her first professional ITF Circuit event in Mexico City in October 2008, losing in the semifinals to Estefana Cracin. She then qualified for another ITF event in Mexico City but was defeated in the second round by Karolina Kosiska. In January 2009, she qualified for the ITF event in Boca Raton, Florida, where she was defeated in the second round by Heidi El Tabakh. Tomljanovi received a wildcard to the 2009 BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, where she was defeated by Angela Haynes. Tomljanovi then suffered three consecutive second-round losses at ITF tournaments in Redding, California, Osprey, Florida, and Makarska, Croatia, falling to Rika Fujiwara, Kateina Kramperová, and Ana Savi, respectively.
